About This Page

Clay Thompson writes daily columns in the Arizona Republic, answering readers' questions on just about any topic. Including sections on Weather and Science, The Human Body, Arizona, Plants and Animals, and a chapter of questions that can only be described as "uncategorical."

I couldn't find a way to use Clay Thompson's article using RSS feeds, so I thought I'd just copy and paste them here. Anyway, I should probably tell you where I am getting his column from: The Arizona Republic – Valley and State section. You can also go to www.azcentral.com.

Why is it that the moon has the same shaded area in bright sunlight as it has at night ? I always thought the shaded area was the “shadow” of the earth ??

  6. Joe Wells says:

When the weather people on TV give an exact time for sunrise what exactly do they mean?
Is it when the sun comes up so they can see it from their office or when the glow is visible over Camelback Mountain? I’m sure it is different times when you live behind a hill or lake.

  7. Joe Wells says:

what does the time given for sunrise and sunset on TV weather actually indicate? Is it the time the weatherman can see the sunrise from his office or when is is visible over Camelback Mountain? What is you live behind a hill or next to a lake?

Clay: I enjoy your articles and wry sense of humor. Here is a question you may wish to use in your column.

Is it possible to get sports announcers to first understand and then use correctly the words “strategy” and “tactics.” A recent examply: There are two seconds left in the basketball, What strategies will the coach use now.” Hope you can have fun with this and maybe help our youth understand the two words have different meanings and uses. Ken

I don’t know if I’m using the correct format or not, but here goes anyway. Your information on racoons (Nov 7, Firday) is a bit off base. I can tell you have never lived in racoon territory – We have had the screens and small windows in our greenhouse (not used for growing things, but more for utility and storage for cat food) ripped and broken as well as the cedar shingle roof ripped off by racoons. A sunscreen attached to our carport was ripped to smithereens too. They are strong, mean and nasty little devils. The cat food (or anything else edible) is kept in the greenhouse anymore – even dogfood is now in heavy duty containers with sturdy bungee cords for extra protection from the racoons sneaky little strong fingers (with razor sharp clawson the ends). You may think I’m exagerating, but we have lived in Az all of our lives (75 yrs) and i have thought of writing to you more than once (we have taken the Republic over 50 yrs) (but have only read your writings the past ten or fifteen or however long you have been writing them – I can’t keep track of time very well. Anyway, this time, I wanted to set you straight about racoons – i would be willing to bet if person that wrote to you regarding the catfood were the only place that crafty racoon could find a meal, it would be back and bring the entire clan and try to find a way to get to the catfood – they will settle for dogfood if that’s all they find. I really doubt they would break a big window, but if it isn’t closed, the screen sure wont stop them.

I hate to break it to you people, but this is NOT the official Clay Thompson website. I am just a fan who used to copy and paste his articals onto this blog in order to get his columns as an RSS Feed to my website. As indicated in the ABOUT page, if you would like to leave comments for Clay Thompson, please visit http://www.azcentral.com and find the Valley and State page where his columns are posted.

    Sorry to disappoint you.

    Clay
    Reference the Haitian baseball players:
I truly believe you would be wise to avoid politically laced comment. After all, you have a great fan following just as it is. There’s no need to wander off into the crazy world of political differences particularly going back the better part of a hundred years.
I love your column and look forward to the daily silly, goofy, and entertaining ‘stuff’ provided.

clay my wife says that if you put a bar of soap under the covers, at the foot of the bed, it will stop leg cramps at night. I told her she’s been sniffing to many cleaning products. I think this is one for the husbands.

  13. why in these hard times at the close of the stock-market the people are shown smiling and clapping even when the market takes a dive? who came up with this idea?

  14. Robert says:

There was a resturant located on Shaw Butte in the North Phoenix Mountain Preserve. Would you know the name of it and a little history on it?
